Responsibilities:
Conscious Kitchen, a program of Turning Green, is working with West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD) on a Farm to School program. This focused effort supports the district in transforming their school food supply chain to prioritize fresh, local, organic products, increasing enrollment through new menus and programming, and expanding farm to school education and leadership opportunities with a cohort of Conscious Kitchen Ambassadors across multiple WCCUSD schools. Ambassadors have typically been 4th-6th grade students, and we are expanding to include middle and high school students.

We seek an Education Coordinator to assist Conscious Kitchen and WCCUSD to coordinate and facilitate the Conscious Kitchen Ambassador program.

Tasks Include:

  • Lead the Conscious Kitchen Ambassador Program, fostering youth advocacy and education through after-school learning sessions to drive food systems change
  • Coordinate the schedules of teachers, interns, and district stakeholders for Conscious Kitchen Ambassador activities.
  • Create resources for use across platforms including infographics, educational campaigns, blogs, videos, etc. 
  • Assist in organizing special events and guest visits 
  • Oversee and administer reports for grant-awarded programming
  • Develop curriculum and teach lessons/activities related to fresh, local, organic food systems  
  • Support the Program Manager with data gathering, analysis, and reporting 
  • Mentor and guide interns assigned to support farm-to-school projects 

One of the primary ways Conscious Kitchen engages youth is through our Conscious Kitchen Ambassador program that leverages students’ desire to help with meal service and gain transferable knowledge and skills. Lessons taught by our team, experts, and college-aged Next Generation Food Systems leaders include tastings and a range of hands-on activities at school sites, including culinary classes, menu and product taste testing while also providing feedback to the district food service team.

This role will include collaboration with teachers at school sites. All programming will link back to the groundbreaking district-wide efforts to improve their meal program.

The Education Coordinator will work closely with Conscious Kitchen’s Executive Director and team, as well as school district team members to support Conscious Kitchen’s work across districts. The applicant will need to be highly organized, able to manage multiple priorities, work well with students and school district professionals, and collaborate well with food service directors and other team members to engage students in food systems education. Applicant must be local to the Bay Area and will work at various school sites across WCCUSD, headquartered in Richmond, CA and other districts in and around the Bay Area. Applicant will be able to work independently, both in person and off-site.

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in agriculture, environmental studies, food systems, nutrition, public health, or other related field 
  • 1-2 years of professional experience with elementary and middle school youth on educational and/or advocacy projects
  • Passion for expanding the use of fresh, local, organic food for schools and engaging students through farm-to-school activities
  • Demonstrated experience in managing strong relationships with multiple stakeholders
  • Strong organizational skills, managing interrelated projects concurrently
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in an inclusive team environment
  • Well-versed in Google Workspace and Microsoft Suite of products
  • Have a valid driver’s license and access to a car
  • Local residency in the Bay Area

This effort supports the district in transforming their school food supply chain to prioritize fresh, local, organic products, and expanding farm to school education and leadership opportunities across multiple WCCUSD schools. 

Tasks Include:

  • Support the Executive Director and Program Manager on weekly supply chain logistics to facilitate the expansion of organic farm-to-school procurement from regional farmers, ranchers, and producers
  • Help design and implement special events and materials that support the organic farm-to-school movement  
  • Lead and mentor interns and fellows to support meaningful work experience and project deliverables (social media, digital communications, research, etc.) 
  • Coordinate the logistics, outreach efforts and follow up communications of special events such as technical trainings and networking opportunities 
  • Support the Education Coordinator with farm-to-school education and leadership opportunities as needed 
  • Highlight program successes through marketing stories and promotional materials
  • Design and organize materials for farm-to-school grant reporting
  • Create materials and guides for regional school districts that will facilitate more fresh, local, organic procurement for school meals
  • Work collaboratively with a range of farm-to-school constituents and community partners

The Program Coordinator will work closely with the Program Manager and Executive Director on supporting the overall success of Conscious Kitchen programming. The applicant will need to be highly organized, self-directed, able to manage multiple priorities, and work well with a wide range of players across the region. The applicant will be responsible for coordinating all aspects of this groundbreaking work including meeting grant requirements and objectives.

The successful candidate will work with Conscious Kitchen (based in Sausalito) and food service teams in and around the San Francisco Bay Area. 

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in agriculture, environmental studies, food systems, nutrition, public health, or other related field 
  • 1-2 years of professional experience 
  • Great verbal and written communications skills
  • Proven relationship development and networking skills with various stakeholders 
  • Strong organizational skills, managing interrelated projects concurrently
  • Knowledge and passion about the intersections of environmental and social justice as it pertains to the food system
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in an inclusive team environment
  • Experience tracking program timelines and reports to meet all required deliverables
  • Interest and advocacy experience in expanding the market for fresh, local, organic food
  • Well-versed in Google Workspace and Microsoft Suite 
  • Have a valid driver’s license and access to a car
  • Local residency in the Bay Area
  • Interest in building a healthy, just, resilient future for people and the planet
