What if the enormous purchasing power of California’s public schools could be used not only to feed children well, but to help reshape the food system around them?
The Conscious Organic School Food Purchasing Cooperative (Conscious Co-op) brings California school districts together to put that purchasing power to work. By combining demand across districts, the Co-op makes organic food more accessible and affordable in school kitchens, and it builds steady, dependable markets for organic farmers, ranchers, and food makers.
The Co-op launched with 17 founding school districts serving more than 300,000 students, with room for many more to join. Our distribution partners, Sysco and UNFI, serve as the bridge between school kitchens and the farms, ranches, and food makers supplying them.
